About the Dallas Area Woodturners
The Dallas Area Woodturners (DAW) was organized in 1996 and has grown to over 200 members. The club focuses on helping novices learn and grow by sharing information and techniques with one other. The DAW is active in community service through woodturning.

The club meets at 7 p.m. on the third Thursday evening of each month (except December). Meetings are held at WoodWorld at TI BLVD and Sherman in Dallas, Texas (13650 TI Blvd #101). Visitors are welcome.

Dues: Dues are $35.00 per household for the current calendar year.
Meetings and other activities include:

Education:At club meetings and other special occasions, demonstrations on a wide variety of topics are presented by club members and professional turners. 


Club Library: DAW has built an extensive library of woodturning books, magazines, and videos that are available to members for checkout.


Tools Library: DAW has started acquiring specialized tools that are available to members for checkout.


Instant Gallery: Members and visitors of all skill levels are encouraged to bring some of their turnings, special tools, homemade jigs, etc. to display at meetings.


Club Drawings: The club holds a monthly drawing to raise money for the library fund and other projects. Each month's tickets are held over for a quarterly drawing for a larger prize.


Club Website: Monthly newsletters are posted on our site along with other club information. Member gallery pages provide a place for pictures of favorite pieces and turning-related items. Club officer contact information is also posted on the Website.


Professional Training: Twice a year Nationally- and internationally-known turners demonstrate at club meetings and provide hands-on training for small groups.


Empty Bowls: DAW participates with local potters to supply bowls for a fund-raiser benefiting the North Texas Food Bank at the Meyerson Symphony Center each year. Attendees get gourmet soups and deserts from well-known local restaurants and a bowl to take home.


Demonstrations: DAW demonstrate at other venues from time to time by turning at schools, local wood stores, art galleries, and civic clubs.


Beads of Courage: Our members turn lidded boxes that are donated to hospitals that are treating children cancer patients. These kids receive a special bead for each procedure they endure. They store their beads in these elaborate boxes which they treat as treasure chests.


Club Newsletter: The club publishes a monthly newsletter to keep members up-to-date on club activities and upcoming events. It is posted on the club web site the week before regularly scheduled meetings. 


American Association of  Woodturners (AAW): DAW is a member of this national woodturning organization and encourages each member to join AAW. The AAW conducts a national symposium each year and publishes a bimonthly  journal. There is a variety of books, videos, and merchandise available on its web site:


AAW Insurance: DAW members who are also members of the AAW are provided liability insurance protection while participating in club functions. Please, refer to the AAW for details.


AAW Collaborative Challenge: DAW has entered this national AAW symposium competition three times. This is a contest in which at least five club members contribute their skills to the project. In 2002, our Hollow Cookie Tree won both First Place in the Fantasy category and Best of Show. In 2009 our Museum of Woodturning won First Place in the Artistic category and Best of Show as well.


Southwest Association of Turners (SWAT): SWAT is an association representing woodturners from Texas and surrounding states. It holds a regional symposium in late August  each year that is second in size only to the annual symposium of the AAW. The SWAT Website is The symposiums are currently held in  Waco Texas.


Discounts: DAW members receive discounts from some local and national merchants.
